U.S. stocks opened higher and held strong all day, led by a rally in technology (XLK), Consumer Discretionary (XLY) and Industrials (XLI) as the AI trade bounced back after tumbling the prior few weeks on debt concerns and high rates impacts. Communications (XLC) and defensive sectors like Staples (XLP) and Healthcare (XLV) pulled back from recent 52-week highs ahead of a week filled with potential market catalysts. The FOMC rate decision is Wednesday the 28th (2 day meeting starts Tuesday) – widely expected to hold rates steady. Shares of AMZN, BA, KO, Visa, GOOGL, MSFT, LLY, SBUX, ABBV, CVX, XOM earnings among many others on tap this week. Also GDP and core PCE inflation data late in the week and both the European Central bank and BOJ holding Central bank policy meetings. In tech news, Anthropic revealed its IPO plans today while ORCL holding its Ai event midweek.
Brazilian stocks plunge (MELI, EWZ, NU, PAGS, PBR, XP, VALE, STNE, ITUB, BBD) after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured a fourth term in Sunday’s presidential runoff, defeating right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro and overturning market expectations of a shift toward more conservative economic policies. Shares of oil major names like PBR tumbled, while banking stocks including ITUB and BBD came under heavy selling pressure. The selloff followed a rally in Brazilian assets after Bolsonaro unexpectedly led the first round of voting earlier this month.
Neocloud/data center stocks such as NBIS, CRWV, HUT, IREN, CIFR, WULF and others were volatile after Elon Musk warned on X that debt markets have shut off funding for AI data center operators lacking independent revenue, predicting ‘guppy-level death and consolidation’ among more than 200 neoclouds. “As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers,” Musk said in an X post on Sunday. Musk went on to say, “That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many.” The group saw early weakness but rebounded as software stocks sold off, reversing the trade seen the last few weeks.
Commodities
- U.S. WTI crude oil futures settle at $101.76 per barrel, down -$1.51, or 1.46%, while Brent crude oil prices dipped -$0.91 or 0.78% to end at $115.81 per barrel, paring losses as persistent attacks on key producer Saudi Arabia kept investors wary and prices near six-month highs, even as diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in the Middle East resumed. Both benchmarks retreated after strong gains on, when Brent settled more than $3 higher to post a weekly gain of 6%, while WTI rose 2.3%. Crude oil futures declined following news that Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman will meet with Iran’s president and National Security Council chief in Tehran to de-escalate regional tensions.
- December gold prices rise +$30.50, or +0.76%, to settle at $4,038.40 an ounce while December silver prices rose $0.39 or 0.73% to settle at $54.34 an ounce. Prices likely to be choppy the next few days ahead of the FOMC rate decision on Wednesday where no rate change is expected, but markets await to see if the commentary is more hawkish then dovish for outlook on futures rate changes.
Currencies & Treasuries
- Treasury yields were little changed after falling last week and ahead of this week’s FOMC rate meeting Wednesday where the Fed is expected to keep rates on hold. Longer-dated yields fell as equities rose ahead of earnings reports from major AI players. Thirty-year bond yields led the decline, while the benchmark 10-year yield remained below 5% after posting its biggest one-day drop in nearly four years last Thursday amid a stock selloff triggered by fears over the sustainability of AI demand. The yield on the benchmark US 10-year Treasury note was last down 1bps at 4.978%. Results of the $69 billion 2-year Treasury auction come in soft, with a final yield 0.3 bps higher than when issued while demand fell short and the Treasury had to offer an extra discount.

ANT said no single customer represented more than 10% of our revenue for the nine months ended Sept 30.
