U.S. stocks opened lower overnight, adding to the prior day losses and starting the month of September (historically the worst month for U.S. stocks) on a down note as another surge in oil prices kept inflation fears a dominant concern following the hawkish comments by Fed Chairman Warsh last week about rates. Oil prices jumped over 5% after an Axios report that the U.S. was carrying out fresh strikes on Iranian targets around strait of Hormuz today. President Trump said this afternoon “if Iran retaliates for this very justified attack, they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level.” Iran later said their Armed Forces have launched a military operation in response to U.S. strikes as American bases and interests across the region will be targeted with missiles and drones. The headlines dominated this afternoons trading sending oil prices surging and stock markets lower on uncertainty. While markets were heavy the last few days, it comes on the heels of a strong August and the S&P 500 (SPX) only a little more than 2% off its all-time highs, with several sectors up double digit % this year. The Volatility index (VIX) closed below the 15 level yesterday for its lowest monthly close since November 2024, but rose as high as 16.80 today before paring gains late day but ending above the 16 level.

Commodities
- U.S. WTI crude oil futures finished near their highs of the day as WTI crude settled at $90.22 per barrel, rising $4.46, or 5.20% while Brent crude spiked $4.16 or 4.6% to settle at $94.65 per barrel on renewed supply fears after resumption in fighting between U.S. and Iran.
- December gold prices fell -$85.10, or -1.90%, at $4,396.40 an ounce while December silver falls -$1.62, or -2.42%, to settle at $65.37 an ounce as elevated Treasury yields and a stronger U.S. dollar weighed on prices, while breaking back below key technical levels. Gold had hit a more than three-month high last week before sliding over 3% on Friday, after U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh warned of having more "work to do" if inflation does not cool down to the central bank’s 2% target. Traders added to bets on a September rate hike after Warsh’s comments.
Currencies & Treasuries
- After surging to the highest levels since January 2025 for the 10-year and 2-year yields, bonds rallied and yields pulled back ahead of key jobs data this week (ADP tomorrow, nonfarm on Friday). The 10-year Treasury yield closed out August at its highest level since January 2025 as the rolling one-year correlation between yields and stocks moved further into negative territory. Another rise in oil prices due to the resumption of strikes in the Iran war had reignited inflation concerns and helped trigger a global bond selloff. The 10-yr hit highs around 4.8% late day as oil prices surged to highs.
