U.S. futures are mixed as investors weighed developments in the Middle East that could influence the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices are edging higher after climbing late last week, but that didn’t stop U.S. markets from closing at highs last Friday. All three indexes recorded their biggest weekly percentage gains since April last week as the S&P 500 gained 3.58%, the Nasdaq rose 5.19%, and the Dow climbed 2.96%. Gains came on Friday after July nonfarm payrolls data showed a decline of -23,000 jobs versus +80,000 estimate and lower revision from the prior months. The data, while negative for the U.S. economy, trimmed bets the Fed would raise rates in coming meetings amid the struggling jobs market. But with inflation data due mid-week (CPI, PPI for July), markets may not stay comfortable for long. Treasury yields fell across the curve following the weak payroll report and are little changed this morning with the 10-yr at 4.65%. Oil extended gains as traders watched for a deal between Iran and Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while Houthi militants claimed an attack on a Saudi refinery near the Red Sea. Brent traded above $84 a barrel after climbing more than 5% over the previous three sessions. West Texas Intermediate was near $79. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index jumped 1,363 points or over 2% to 66,970, the Shanghai Index gained 26 points to 3,966, and the Hang Seng Index advanced 269 points to 25,937. In Europe, the German DAX is up 108 points to 26,427, while the FTSE 100 is down -26 points to 10,874.
